Importing CrazyTalk 7 extras into CrazyTalk 8

If you tend to keep your preferred application for a long time (like I do), you inevitably run into situations where your software becomes incompatible with the latest version of your operating system.

I found this out the hard way, when trying to use Reallusions’s CrazyTalk 7 on my new Windows 11 machine.

CrazyTalk is a fantastic animation program that allows you to animate the picture of a face (photo or drawing) based on a recorded voice file. The mouth movements are synchronized automatically (lip-sync) and you can add facial expressions to the timeline.

If this sounds too abstract, have a look at what we did way a long time ago using CrazyTalk 7:

Unfortunately, CrazyTalk 7 would not install on Windows 11. But we had also purchased CrazyTalk 8 at the time, and it does work on the latest Windows 11.

However, I was not able to install all the extras and bonus packs we had purchased for CT7 into CT8. I asked Reallusion for help and they pointed me in the right direction.

Here is how to proceed:

  1. Get the free downloader installer from https://www.reallusion.com/downloader/ and run it. This installs a program that is used in the next stage.
  2. Login to your your Reallusion account and go to the Inventory List page: https://marketplace.reallusion.com/inventory-list

Beside each item, you see an Install.RLD link. Example:

Clicking on the Install.RLD link downloads a file called Installcontent.rlcontent. Double-click that file and it installs your content into CrazyTalk 8.

If you have multiple content items, you may wish to rename the Installcontent.rlcontent files so that you can keep them apart. But do not change the .rlcontent extension.

And that’s it.

Thanks to the Reallusion support team for still offering help with a program that is almost 10 years old!
